OUR CAMPAIGNS

A Little Piece of Light turns lived experience into policy change. These are our active campaigns and coalitions.

13th Forward

ALPOL proudly co-leads 13th Forward. The Commissary Bill (S1692B/A2592B) has passed both houses of the New York State Legislature and now awaits the Governor's signature. The bill would cap commissary prices at no more than 3% over purchase price and require greater price transparency — a meaningful step toward reducing the financial burden on incarcerated people and their families. We are urging the Governor to sign it.

C.O.V.E.R. — Coalition for Voter Education and Registration

Democracy needs every voice. Through C.O.V.E.R., ALPOL has helped register more than 1,500 voters, expanding civic education and engagement for returning citizens and communities too often excluded from political power.

End Prison Violence Coalition

Through this coalition, ALPOL works to expose abuse, violence, medical neglect, retaliation, and accountability gaps within correctional systems. Safety and dignity do not end at a prison gate.

Collaborative for Restoring Healing and Transforming Communities

A Little Piece of Light is one of nine New York City organizations in the Collaborative, fostering transformative, neighborhood-based approaches to intimate partner violence. Together we build non-carceral responses that further accountability and the right to heal — seeding healing justice and restorative practices, meeting people where they are, and transforming cultural norms of punishment.

Living Wage for All

ALPOL brings a directly impacted perspective to the Living Wage for All movement alongside the NAACP, One Fair Wage, labor leaders, and economic-justice advocates. "One in three families are being forced into debt to care for an incarcerated loved one." — Donna Hylton, New York Amsterdam News

Policy Wins

New Jersey Survivors Justice Act — signed into law January 20, 2026. Courts can now consider whether domestic violence or abuse contributed to a person's conviction, creating pathways to reduced sentencing and resentencing.

Adult Survivors Act — ALPOL stood as a voice for women who experienced sexual trauma under the care, custody, and control of the criminal legal system. More than 750 women came forward.

#CLOSErikers

A Little Piece of Light stands with the Campaign to Close Rikers. Dr. Donna Hylton has been a public voice in the fight to shut down the Rikers Island jail complex — speaking out against its violence and inhumane conditions, defending bail reform, and pressing the city to invest in communities, not cages. AJ Johnson serves as ALPOL's point person on the Campaign to Close Rikers.

Women and Girls Project

Our leadership development initiative empowers and uplifts women and girls affected by trauma. Through phased workshops — women's health and wellness, skills enhancement, etiquette and leadership, and civic engagement — plus cultural outings across New York City, members recognize their own strengths, build self-sufficiency, and step into leadership. All programs are created and led by members, with rotating horizontal leadership. Through the project, we have supported over 75 young women and girls in their leadership development.
